We offer classes in the following disciplines:-
STREET DANCE/HIP HOP:
Street Dance/Hip Hop is a modern style of dance performed to popular music – from pop to hip hop. You are most likely to see this style of dance in a music video danced by backing dancers and stars such as Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Ciara, Beyonce, Rhiannon, Tynchy Stryder, Neyo etc.
Street Dance/Hip Hop is the term used to describe a variety of different styles of dance. These might include locking, popping, tutting, krumping, clowning, breaking, old school, new style, house and commercial street jazz.
Street Dance/Hip Hop is more popular amongst the youths of today as it is suited to more commercial based music. The basic steps and movements are taken from other forms of dance such as latin, disco and contemporary but are danced with a funky element and no rules! Street dance is usually choregraphed to the beats, lyrics and musicality of the music.
These workshops/classes provide tutoring on many aspects of musical theatre including vocal training and incorporating performance through song and dance. Learning a variety of musical theatre songs and dances which can be performed on stage. Fantastic for confidence building and great fun!!
This style of dance originated from the 1970’s made famous by John Travolta and Saturday Night Fever. The style has now been developed over the years into an artistic style of dance involving runs, spins, kicks and leaps as well as many other diverse steps and movements with lots of different arm and hand actions. This style can be danced to slow or fast music and allowing the individual dancer the freedom to express themselves to produce freestyle disco dancing. You would mostly see this style of dance being performed on stage at a theatre. Also, this dance style attracts dancers who wish to compete at regular freestyle dance competitions. These competitions are held throughout the UK and dancers can perform their routines in either solo, pairs or team categories.
ROCK AND ROLL:
If you want a good work out this is the dance for you. During the war the big band swing music was at the height of its popularity. The American GI’s brought a new style of improvised dance called the jitterbug. From this style our present day Jive and Rock and Roll has been developed. This style of dance is usually danced with a partner however line dancing and strolls are incorporated into the teaching which is danced individually.
The classes always begin with a good warm up and end with a cool down and stretches. Throughout the classes students are taught basic steps and movements of different styles of dance. Students are then taught a routine to a modern up to date music track.
Students are also encouraged to participate in activities where they can input their ideas to help them engage with the class. Students are taught how to not just dance well but also how to perform well too. Ocassionally students are encouraged to learn “Freestyle” techniques (dancing on their own to their own individual style) to help build confidence in expression.
You can simply just come along and have fun each week or progress further by taking exams and participating in shows and competitions. Why not consider joining one of our Hip Hop Crews? We compete all over the UK and into Europe and have even competed at the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas!
